This has been popping up on my newsfeed for weeks now and I fucking hate it. I get that body image is a complicated aspect of the media and that anorexia/bulimia/general EDs are a big problem now, but this is vicious. Can we not call people with legitimate mental illnesses freaks? Can we also not shame any kind of body, ever? Furthermore, can we stop using the word “showbiz,” and if we do use it can we spell it correctly? Yeesh.

It is the height of irony that women are valued for our looks, encouraged to make ourselves beautiful and ornamental… and are then derided as shallow and vain for doing so. And it’s a subtle but definite form of sexism to take one of the few forms of expression where women have more freedom, and treat it as a form of expression that’s inherently superficial and trivial. This is something that prompted me to write a two page rant on Microsoft Word last week, which I don’t think I’ve done since the fifth grade when I realized I didn’t really believe in god.

I also realized women have to go through this endless shame spiral, where we are pressured to look attractive, leading to insecurities and “superficial,” “vain” forms of validation (buying clothes, wearing make-up, etc) and then we are subsequently shamed for doing so. The same society making us ashamed and insecure is making us more ashamed and insecure about our shame and insecurities. That is some Christopher Nolan shit.
